Gabriel Carini has expanded Carini Heating And Air Conditioning’s commercial services to include cell site maintenance, servicing and installation.

SAN DIEGO, Carini Heating and Air Conditioning recently launched a new commercial service: installing, servicing and maintaining air conditioning and heating systems for cell sites.

More commonly known as cell phone towers, cell sites are where antennas and electronic communications equipment are placed, typically on a steel pole or lattice radio mast, tower or other high place, to create a cell in a cellular network.

“Working with commercial grade air conditioning systems for cell sites is an exciting development for the company,” says Gabriel Carini, an HVAC professional in the San Diego area.

A typical cell site may include antennas, transmitter and receivers or transceivers, digital signal processors, control electronics, a GPS receiver, primary and backup electrical power sources and some type of sheltering. All of the equipment is generating heat and must be adequately cooled and ventilated to work properly.

“A cell tower going down would affect thousands of the client’s customers, so it is essential that the air conditioning and heating systems work seamlessly,” he says.

The complexity of commercial grade air conditioning systems and the demanding nature of the business are challenges Carini and his team are qualified to handle and ready to take on.

“Our company has thousands of satisfied clients in the residential and business categories, and we are excited to be adding more satisfied commercial clientele to that list as well,” he says.

Changing air filters on heating and cooling units is quick and relatively easy, but this basic maintenance is often neglected to the detriment of the equipment and homeowners, according to Gabriel Carini.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – Too often out of sight means out of mind, especially when it comes to air filters, but heating and cooling expert Gabriel Carini says changing them on schedule is important for the residents’ health and the effectiveness and life of the unit.

“Filters keep dust and dirt from entering HVAC equipment and prevent pollutants from being spread throughout the home,” says the owner of Carini Heating and Air Conditioning in San Diego.

The indoor comfort system ductwork functions as an expressway for pollutants like pollen, pet hair and dander, mold spores, dust mites, mildew, smoke, odors and bacteria. A high-quality air filter is what removes them from air circulation, but filters must be replaced or cleaned regularly to be effective.

“If the filter is full, it’s not catching all those pollutants and you are breathing them instead,” says Carini. “This can cause or aggravate allergies, asthma and other health problems.”

Clogged filters also make the heating and air conditioning unit work harder and use more energy to maintain the indoor temperature. Letting dirt, dust and other particles get into the equipment is basically cutting down on the life expectancy and increasing the chance of a costly air conditioning or furnace repair.

“I recommend homeowners use the most effective filters that are compatible with their home comfort systems and their budgets,” says Carini, who is an expert in residential and commercial heating and air. “They should inspect filters monthly and replace or clean them as needed.”

There are many types of air conditioner and furnace filters to choose from with different sizes, efficiencies, designs and quality. The main filter types are reusable, disposable panel, pleated and electrostatic pleated. Carini says pleated air filters are the most common because of their effectiveness, convenience and wide range of efficiencies and design characteristics. Some filters have carbon to help eliminate odors or electrostatic to more effectively attract and trap dirt. He cautions homeowners away from the inexpensive fiberglass panel filters because they are not very effective and do little to protect health or the HVAC system.

Instead of the brand or price, homeowners should look at the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value to determine the quality of a filter. The rating system was created by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers. The MERV rates filters from one to 16, the higher the number the more efficient the filter is at removing indoor air particles.

“A filter with a MERV 12 is the best balance between airborne particulate removal and overall heating and cooling system efficiency,” he says. “Anything higher than 12 is going to cause too much drag for the standard residential HVAC system to effectively handle.”

The system manual lists the size, recommended type and maintenance schedule for the indoor comfort system. Heating and air conditioning repair, service and installation technicians can also help homeowners determine this information. It is important to find out this information for sure because some systems have multiple filter locations and even multiple types of filters.

Measurements are typically printed on the air filter frame as height, width and depth. Sizes are standardized, but a filter that is listed as 24 x 24 x 1 will actually measure something like 23 7/8 x 23 7/8 x 1/2. Custom-sized replacement filters can be ordered online.

Gabriel Carini, owner of a San Diego air conditioning and heating company, urges homeowners to have furnaces inspected to prevent fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA -The holiday season probably has most people wrapped up in a flurry of friends, family, shopping deals or travel, and as temperatures dip lower people turn on the furnace without a second thought.

That is why Gabriel Carini, owner of a San Diego air conditioning and heating service, repair and installation company, is reminding homeowners to have their furnaces inspected and cleaned to prevent fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.

“We know that furnace maintenance is not exactly the first thing on anyone’s mind, but we also want to make sure everyone stays safe,” says Carini, who is an expert in heating and air conditioning installation.

Richard M. Morrow, vice president of customer services for San Diego Gas & Electric utility company, urged customers to be safe and get their furnaces inspected by a licensed, qualified professional since the leading cause of carbon monoxide in a home is due to a problem with the furnace.

“You have to know what to look for and know how to safely and efficiently use and maintain gas appliances,” says Carini, who has years of experience with whole house air conditioning, heating service and the HVAC industry.

The initial symptoms of low to moderate CO poisoning are similar to the flu and include headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea and dizziness.

Incomplete combustion is what produces the carbon monoxide that can potentially lead to carbon monoxide poisoning to a family. It happens when carbon-based fuels, such as kerosene, gasoline, propane, natural gas, oil, charcoal or wood, are burned with inadequate amounts of oxygen. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas.

“There are also carbon monoxide detectors that can alert homeowners of a dangerous level of the gas, but that does not mean they should neglect routine inspections of their furnace for their own safety,” says Carini.

For more information about carbon monoxide poisoning and safety, visit the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission or the local utility company.

Gabriel Carini, a San Diego heating repair expert, discusses the pros and cons of hanging a furnace from trusses, rafters and joists.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA -You may have never considered it, but there are some very convincing reasons to hang your furnace instead of leaving it on the ground in a crawlspace or in a closet in the house.

In most cases, hanging the furnace is actually the ideal location, according to Gabriel Carini, the founder of Carini Heating and Air Conditioning, a San Diego heating repair expert.

Why Is Hanging The Furnace Ideal? The most obvious benefit of getting a furnace up off the ground is that it’s easier access to the system. Bowen Smith, a heating and air service technician with the company, recounts a recent job as an example of why this is helpful.

This client had an existing furnace and water heater in the crawlspace of his home. The water heater flooded and because the furnace was on the ground, he found the unit sitting in six or seven inches of water, Smith says. With the client’s furnace inoperable, he had to go without air conditioning, too.

The heating and cooling systems of a home have many components that work hand in hand to provide optimum indoor comfort, so any change, upgrade or break down of one effects the other.

“Had the furnace been installed as a hanging one, he could have avoided the cost of repairing the unit and the inconvenience of being without an indoor comfort system while the water heater was fixed,” says Carini, an HVAC repair expert.

The client ended up having Carini’s cooling and heating company do a complete overhaul to the existing systems, and he opted to hang the furnace in the crawlspace.

Want A Quieter, More Efficient System? Other benefits of hanging a furnace are that the system tends to be more efficient and quieter than one on a basic platform on the ground or floor. Even a unit installed to code is in closer proximity to dust, pollen, allergens and other air particles that get pulled into the system.

“A well-designed furnace is built to avoid air leakage but over time most will develop small cracks or openings,” explains Carini, an AC repair professional. “Because of the pressure difference, the furnace draws air through those openings.”

Basically, the motor and electrical components are running longer and using more energy. The system has to move more air- and filter more air with more particles and allergens-to maintain the desired indoor temperature.

Getting a truly level surface on the ground can be difficult. When the system is off-balance, even slightly, it vibrates and makes more noise when it is running. Hanging a furnace allows the service technician to truly level the unit and lower the noise level inside the home when the unit is running.

How About Avoiding Costly Repairs? Another reason a level unit is crucial is to make sure the coil is aligned exactly right.

“The coil needs to be level to keep the water the AC has pulled out of the air where it belongs,” says Smith. “When the water is going anywhere else it is going to result in poor air quality and repairs or replacement of the unit.”

When water gets back into the unit because of an uneven coil, the moisture can soak the insulation, damage or ruin the main control board or allow algae and mold to grow inside the system. Smith says he has seen this happen to many clients during his 12 years in the heating and cooling industry.

Why Isn’t This Installation Method Used More Often? With all the benefits of this application, and according to Carini and Smith no drawbacks, one wonders why anyone would decide to do it a different way.

“Not everyone wants to spend the money on making it right,” says Carini. “Some care, but some want the Band-Aid instead.”

The cost varies from $200 to $2,000, depending on the application and how involved the process is going to be. In some cases, service technicians have had to cut open the crawlspace to fit the unit through the opening in addition to rerouting gas, electrical and return lines when moving a unit from a closet.

“Here is what puts that price into perspective though,” says Carini. “The expected lifespan of a furnace installed on the ground is 10 to 20 years. With the hanging application, the expected life of the furnace is at least 20.”

Gabriel Carini, a San Diego air conditioning expert, breaks down the steps of choosing an HVAC specialist into a convenient how-to for homeowners.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – Owning a home or business inevitably comes with maintenance and repairs, and the structure’s HVAC system is no exception. The question then is how to go about hiring a reputable contractor to complete the work.

Gabriel Carini, owner of Carini Heating and Air Conditioning, is helping people weed through the options with his how-to tips to identify the right fit for their project needs.

1- Collect recommendations. Word of mouth is a great way to get recommendations for cooling and air conditioning contractors. Start with friends and family, ask around the community or use directory listings to compile a list.

2- Call them up. This ensures they offer the services needed and gives a snapshot of the company’s approach to customer service. They should be able to provide a list of previous clients as references.

3- Verify the information. Contact the references and ask to see their final results. Be sure to ask for information about the company’s employees’ punctuality, accuracy, customer service and experience in the industry.

“Online reviews like the ones on Google and Angie’s List can provide helpful clues to a company’s reputation in the community and the quality of their work,” says Carini, a San Diego heating and cooling expert.

Check in with California’s consumer protection agency and the local Better Business Bureau to make sure contractors hold the proper licenses and do not have a history of disputes with clients.

4- Get written estimates. Many companies offer free estimates on whole house system installations and replacement. For the most accurate comparison, get written estimates with the same work and specifications but keep in mind that the least expensive option may or may not be the best overall deal.

Whether the project is routine maintenance, a simple cooling or heating repair or a whole-house system installation, the client deserves quality work done by courteous, professional technicians in a timely manner and that is our main goal.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – Whenwinter weather starts to set in, owners of vintage and older homes and businesses are the ones who feel the cool air coming in first.
“The key to making a home or other building more thermally efficient and comfortable in cold weather is to limit the opportunities for these losses,” says Gabriel Carini, a San Diego heating repair expert.

There are two major ways buildings lose heat: conduction and infiltration. Conduction is heat transfer through materials, and infiltration means air is moving through cracks and joints. These are the areas to focus on when working to weatherize a home.

Many of these fixes do not require specialized skills or expensive materials, just a commitment of time, energy and some basic supplies available at local hardware stores, according to the owner of Carini Heating and Air Conditioning.
Caulk Window and Door Frames
Caulking around window and door frames, paying special attention to where trim meets shingles or clapboards, creates a barrier against air and water infiltration.Joints between building materials, where wood meets stone for example, are another area to target with the caulking gun.

“The goal is to improve what’s called the building envelope, sealing up joints and gaps where the weather can penetrate,” says Carini, a heating air conditioning and ventilation expert.

Using the appropriate type of caulking and avoiding moisture vapor exits are essential. The undersides of windows and doorsor where clapboards overlap are examples of “moisture vapor exits.” Carini recommends using good-quality acrylic-latex caulk for areas that are going to be painted.

Address The Foundation
Masonry settles and wood swells or shrinks depending on temperature. Over time, homes’ foundations are often impacted by this subtle shifting and may crack or gap. These types of issues are common but should be fixed before a homeowner tries to seal up air leaks with caulking.

Replace or Install Weatherstripping
Weatherstripping seals air leaks around movable joints, such as windows or doors. It can be made from a wide variety of materials, including felt, foam, vinyl, rubber and metal.
“If you don’t already have weatherstripping, do some research to find out the best material for your home and install it,” says Carini. “Inspect existing weatherstrips for bent or missing sections and repair.”
When done correctly, this is effective for eliminating or drastically reducing drafts, as well as cutting down on your heating and cooling costs.

Put A Damper On Heat Loss
“Check the fireplace damper,” says Carini. “It sounds basic, but it is easy to forget. “Most fireplaces have a built-in damper that closes off the flue and limits heat loss when the fireplace is not in use. Make sure the damper is not damaged by age or stuck due to debris.

Insulate Unheated Crawlspaces
Properly insulating crawl spaces, used in combination with air sealing and controlling moisture, will save on your energy costs and increase the comfort of your home. The method for insulating a crawl space depends on whether the area is ventilated or unventilated.
“This is a more involved project and care should be taken so that the insulation installed does not create unhealthy or hazardous conditions in or around the home,” says Carini, an air conditioning repair professional.

Don’t Forget To Look Up
Wherever there are penetrations like pipes, vents, hatches, recessed lights or cracks, there is an easy avenue for air movement, so focus efforts on closing those penetrations. Larger penetrations can be closed off with plywood or wallboard. Smaller penetrations, such as joints and cracks, should be sealed with caulking suited for the type of material and area.

Winter is when people use their heating system the most, so getting a fall tune-up is recommended for all residential and commercial HVAC systems to ensure that the system is ready when needed.

“A regular maintenance schedule, including a fall tune-up, keeps the system running efficiently and helps avoid any major problems,” says Carini, owner of Carini Heating and Air Conditioning a San Diego heating and air conditioning repair service.

“For greater peace of mind, we also offer a preventive maintenance agreement that includes the fall tune-up in addition to a spring tune-up, a warranty on all repairs and a discount on system and parts replacement,” says Carini, a heating and whole house air conditioner repair expert.

Gabriel Carini answers frequently asked questions about heating and air, San Diego air quality and how to choose a new heating and cooling system.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA- After nearly a decade in business, Gabriel Carini has been asked a fair share questions about heating and cooling. Here the owner of Carini Heating and Air Conditioning answers a few of the most frequently asked questions:

How Can I Save Money On My Heating And Cooling Costs?
A home’s HVAC system is typically the biggest energy consumer in a home, so among homeowners’ top concerns is how to cut down on their energy costs.
“Many of the ways are simple and inexpensive, such as changing a habit or putting the time in for maintenance,” says Carini, a heating service and installation professional.

Regular tune-ups keep the system running at top efficiency and catch many issues before they become major problems.

Inspect cooling and heating equipment monthly.

Keep up with routine maintenance. Outdoor condensing units can get clogged with dirt, dust and other matter that block air flow, which makes the system work harder, increasing the cost of running it.

Set the thermostat at a higher level during the summer and lower level during the winter

Turn the system off when not in use, such as when you are gone on vacation or gone for extended periods of time.

Inspect heating and cooling ducts for leaks.

Replace or clean air filters regularly, as directed.

Install a programmable thermostat to set back to lower or higher temperatures when the heating and cooling is not needed.

Upgrade or add attic insulation to keep the home or business’ conditioned air from escaping through the ceiling.

Are The Products With The Energy Star Label Worth Buying?
Every home and business owner has their own budget when replacing an indoor comfort system, but we recommend doing whatever it takes to make an Energy Star product fit into that budget.

“There is a larger upfront cost, but the long-term savings on energy costs and the lower impact on the environment make Energy Star products a better investment over time,” says Carini, who is an expert in whole house air conditioner repair.
Some energy companies offer service credits when homeowners or business owners upgrade to an energy efficient heating and cooling system, and there may be a tax credit available for certain systems. The Energy Star label means a product has met strict efficiency standards in order to qualify.

There is a quick way to tell how efficient a system is by checking the unit. Efficiency is rated with a ratio of heating or cooling output to fuel consumption. The Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency ratio is for furnaces, and the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio is for air conditioners and heat pumps. A high rating means lower energy costs, and a low rating means higher fuel costs. A SEER rating in the high teens is a good system since the maximum rating is 20.

What Features Do HVAC Systems Offer?
The technology behind HVAC systems continues to improve, offering high performance, feature laden and efficient indoor air comfort, so what a homeowner often has quite a few choices.

“The key things to look for are performance and efficiency,” says Carini, an air conditioning service, repair and installation expert. “But many have bonuses like how quietly it operates, refrigerants that are safe for the environment and add-on products to improve indoor air quality or whole house dehumidifiers.”

How Do I Pick The Right System For Me?
Many factors go into choosing a new heating and cooling system, but one of the first things to determine is what size unit is needed. A Carini technician can provide a load calculation and estimated operating cost energy analysis.

With the unit size selected, the homeowner needs to take into account what features are needed or wanted for the property. There are some indoor comfort products that can reduce air stratification-much warmer upper floors in a home-and uneven temperatures from room to room.

“Some units have an ECM, which stands for electronically commutated motor, that continuously circulate and filter the air, which can be very beneficial for people with respiratory problems,” says Carini, an expert in heating and air. San Diego continues to have very poor air quality, according to a study published by the American Lung Association this year, so indoor air quality is even more important to many San Diego residents.

There are also different types of ductwork to choose from, including alternatives that improve indoor air quality or for dampening sound.
Once the homeowner has narrowed it down to a few options, the final step is to determine the efficiency of the systems in question and personal budget. “One unit may cost more than the other, but you have to factor in any monthly savings,” says Carini. “Depending on how long you plan to live there, the savings over time will offset the initial costs.”
